As of 31.12.2015, there were 48 alternative investment fund managers (AIFMs) in Austria that were subject to supervision by the FMA. Of them, 27 held a licence issued by the FMA, with the remaining 21 being subject to a registration procedure that is simplified in comparison with the licencing procedure. In total these 1,036 (although two AIFMs were not yet subject to reporting requirements at the cut-off point) alternative investment funds (AIFs) had Net Asset Values (NAV) of EUR 89.5 billion or total assets under management (AuM) of EUR 109.5 billion (the latter figure also reflects asset values on the basis of leveraged financing by means of derivatives, borrowing against assets or securities lending transactions). These figures have emerged from the FMA’s market analysis up to 31.12.2015.<\/p>

The AIFs subject to reporting requirements include five hedge funds (EUR 212 million NAV), twelve real estate funds (EUR 5.8 billion NAV), 20 private equity funds (EUR 615 million NAV), 457 funds of funds (EUR 34.2 billion NAV) and a further 542 funds with mixed investment strategies (EUR 48.7 billion NAV). 84% of the unit certificated of AIFs are held by professional investors, with the remaining 16% held by retail customers. 268 of the 1,036 managed AIFs also included retail customers as investors. Within these AIFs retail customers primarily invest in funds of funds and real estate funds.<\/p>

Half of the AIFs reported manage NAV of less than EUR 25.6 million or AuM of less than EUR 27.3 million. More than half of all AIFs does not use leveraged financing. Under the legal definition of leveraged financing only three hedge funds used leveraged financing to a considerable extent based on their investment strategy.<\/p>
