The Austrian Financial Market Authority (FMA) podcast “Reden wir über Geld” (Let’s talk about money) has launched a new format – “Cash & Crime” that is reminiscent of the true crime genre. The podcast’s host Patricia Floh-Weninger welcomes her colleague Bibiane Kaufmann, an experienced investigator at the FMA. She talks about real cases, involving real money and people who have been the victims of fraudsters. All personal details have of course been anonymised.<\/p>

In the first episode “Die WhatsApp-Connection”<\/a> (The WhatsApp Connection) a scam is covered that has also been highly prevalent in Austria over the last year. Apparent investment professionals use seemingly profession chat groups to provide exclusive investment tips. Under pressure from the group and using psychological tricks, victims are coerced into making sizeable transfers: frequently involving six-digit sums. The episode uses the example of “Simone M.”, to explain what you need to be aware of in order to not fall for fraudulent offers.<\/p>
