Oliver Schütz has taken up his duties as the new Executive Director of the Austrian Financial Market Authority (FMA) with effect from 01 November 2026. He was nominated by the Oesterreichische Nationalbank (OeNB) and following proposal by the Federal Government was appointed for a five-year term by the Federal President. Schütz succeeds Helmut Ettl, who has taken up his position as Executive Director at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) after serving as FMA Executive Director for 18 years. Mariana Kühnel has held the other Executive Director position since 06 July 2025.

“We’re looking forward to working together as the FMA’s Executive Board”, remarked Mariana Kühnel and Oliver Schütz. “We have strong foundations to build on and will continue to develop the FMA’s successful course together amid the increasingly interconnected new risks for the financial market. We want to focus even more intensely on material risks, to simplify processes and to dedicate our resources in the areas in which they can ensure the largest impact. Efficiency, risk-based approaches and transparency are the key guiding principles for a modern and efficiency supervisory authority.”

The FMA’s priorities for supervision and inspections for 2027 will be presented in a press conference on 11 December 2026.

Oliver Schütz was born on 17 November 1972, and studied law at the University of Innsbruck and wrote his doctoral thesis on banking supervision. Following a legal traineeship at Binder Grösswang, he joined the FMA in 2002, the year in which the FMA was founded. From 2006 to 2010 he was a Head of Division in the FMA’s Banking Supervision Department. Following positions in the private sector from 2010 to 2015 (Erste Group Bank and UniCredit Bank Austria), Schütz rejoined the FMA in 2015 as Managing Director of the newly established Bank Resolution Department. He already represents the FMA in various international committees, including the extended Executive Session of the Single Resolution Board (SRB) in Brussels.
