Digitalisation of the Austrian Financial Market

FMA Priorities for Supervision regarding the Digitalisation of the Financial Market

Digital transformation is also advancing at break-neck speed in the area of financial services, and changing the framework of the Austrian financial market. In 2018, the Austrian Financial Market Authority (FMA) therefore started to analyse the digitalisation of the Austrian financial market, and a new comprehensive study covering all sectors was conducted in 2021 and again in 2024.

These priorities for supervision help the FMA to identify concentration risks and potential channels of contagion, to incorporate the implications of digitalisation in supervised entities adequately in the FMA’s risk-based approach to supervision, and to analyse the trends and drivers of digitalisation in the Austrian financial market. They also permit fair conditions for competition to be established between analogue and digital providers, solutions and products. The findings regularly feed into the FMA’s strategy for supervision, and are taken into account when determining the priorities for supervision. The reports about the most important findings also serve as basis for initiating a broad discussion about the implications of digitalisation in the Austrian financial market.
