Memecoins, network martketing, phishing? Consumers are confronted with an increasing number of new terms and concepts from the financial world on social media and in daily life. The Austrian Financial Market Authority (FMA)’s series “Let’s talk about money” (“Reden wir über Geld”) has been informing consumers for several years, and this year has been extended to Instagram, a podcast and the video format “1 Minute – 1 Begriff” (“A term explained in a minute”), in which experts from the FMA’s specialist divisions explain financial topics briefly and clearly. The second edition covers the issue of what “memecoins” are, and how these tokens, which can on occasion be highly speculative and susceptible to fraud, differ from other crypto-assets like Bitcoin. They are often based on short-lived hype or fun projects, and in many instances early investors or the initiators profit mainly, which the majority end up empty-handed.
“1 Minute – 1 Begriff” videos can be found on the FMA’s Instagram channel @redenwiruebergeld and on the FMA’s YouTube Channel. As with its Instagram presence and its podcast, Content Agentur Austria is again assisting the FMA in producing these videos. Content Agentur Austria is part of the Wiener Zeitung media group, and supports public sector establishments as well as the private sector by providing content services.
