The total assets managed by Austrian Pensionskassen (pension companies) stood at EUR 25.97 billion at the end of the 1st quarter of 2022, a decrease by € 998 million or -3.7% compared with the previous quarter. In comparison with the 1st quarter of 2021, this amount is € 470 million or +1.8% higher. During the reporting period there were approx. 1.02 million beneficiaries (entitled and recipients) (+0.85% compared to the previous quarter). Around 129,000 or 12.58% of those individuals drew a pension from this form of company old-age provision. The investment performance that is calculated by the Oesterreichische Kontrollbank (OeKB) on a quarterly basis stood at -3.77% in the 1st quarter of 2022, with single-employer Pensionskassen (2%) performing better than multi-employer Pensionskassen (-3.91%). On average over the last three years the performance was +4.05%, over the last five years +3.14%, and for the last ten years +4.13%. A total of eight Pensionskassen were active in the Austrian market, of which five were multi-employer ones and three single-employer ones. These findings emerged from the “Q1 2022 Quarterly Report for Pensionskassen” that was published today by the Austrian Financial Market Authority (FMA).

Approximately 96.80% of the assets managed by the Pensionskassen were held indirectly via investment funds. With regard to the different investment categories, the managed assets were predominantly invested in equities (39.02%) and debt securities (32.24%). The remainder was spread between balances held at banks 6.45%, real estate 6.34%, loans and credits 1.31%, and other assets 14.64%. After hedges, 34.73% of the investment volume is held in foreign currencies.
