Are digital coins an alternative to money and banks? A fast track to wealth? A normal form for investing money? How safe are crypto-assets? In the fifth episode of the FMA’s “Reden wir über Geld” podcast, experts Fiona Springer and Patricia Floh-Weninger are covering the issue of crypto-assets, and for the first time, they also have a guest joining them. Ralph Rirsch, an expert on crypto-assets at the FMA explains: What is Bitcoin, what is the blockchain, what are stablecoins and how can you tell whether a crypto exchange is reputable?

In the latest episode of the podcasts, the FMA’s experts provide an overview about the types of crypto-assets and explain why an increasing level of regulation is also good news for investors, and what they need to bear in mind regarding the custody of coins. The segment “Fraud der Folge” (fraud of the episode) also highlights fraudulent scheme associated with crypto-assets, known as the “Rug Pull”. It entails advertising a new crypto-assets project with a large marketing outlay. As soon as enough money has flowed into the system, the developers withdraw the capital and allow the project to collapse. All that is left is a valueless coin and disappointed investors.

The new episode of the “Reden wir über Geld” podcast can be downloaded on all major podcasting platforms and at https://redenwiruebergeld.fma.gv.at/podcast. The FMA’s consumer information can be found on Instagram at @redenwiruebergeld. A current warning issued by the European Supervisory Authorities about crypto-assets can be found on the FMA website.
