“Money isn’t something you should talk about? Perhaps we really ought to!” is the slogan that the Austrian Financial Market Authority (FMA) is using to launch its new consumer information channel “Let’s talk about money” (German: “Reden wir über Geld”). Each month we will explain interesting aspects about various basic financial topics and provide answers to everyday financial issues.

The first edition covers the topic “Beware of financial scams!” and explains how a few simple steps before reaching an investment decision can help to ensure that you don’t fall victim to financial fraudsters. In February the FMA will address what to look out for when taking out an online consumer loan, while the March edition will contain tips for using insurance comparison portals.

“We want to use this new format to provide an objective source of information for anyone who feels unsure about various financial topics due to their breadth and complexity, and to find straightforward answers to everyday issues relating to money”, the FMA’s Executive Board Members, Helmut Ettl and Eduard Müller remarked. The topics addressed in this new channel are decided upon based on the most frequent enquiries to the FMA’s consumer information hotline, and are answered in short and simple language, added Ettl and Müller.

Collective consumer protection has been a priority for the FMA’s operative supervision and inspections for many years. Following its A to Z of Finance on the FMA’s website, “Let’s talk about money” is the FMA’s second proactive financial literacy initiative. All editions are available both in print (in German only) as well as online (in German and English) via the website at https://redenwiruebergeld.fma.gv.at/.
