The three European Supervisory Authorities (EBA , EIOPA and ESMA ) have published an interactive factsheet, in which consumers’ most frequently asked questions about sustainable finances are answered. The factsheet contains tips for consumers who are currently considering purchasing financial products with a sustainability focus – including loans, investments, insurance and pension products.

The factsheet answers the most frequently asked questions, and shows the steps that consumers can take to understand how their financial decisions can contribute to a more sustainable future.

4 tips for financial products with a sustainability focus

In addition, the factsheet contains 4 tips that consumers should consider before deciding upon financial products with a sustainability focus. Consumers are recommended to

  • decide how important sustainability is for them as well as the financial goals they wish to achieve, before choosing a product;
  • pay attention to the conditions and sustainability features, to avoid being misled by ‘greenwashing’;
  • keep in mind that financial product with sustainability features are not risk-free;
  • take their time to decide for investments and life insurance policies, and if need be, seek further clarification from the firm or person that advises you about and sells you such products.
