FMA department director Peter Braumüller elected Chairman of the Executive Committee of the International Association of Insurance Supervisors (IAIS)

At the 15th Annual Conference and General Meeting of the International Association of Insurance Supervisors (IAIS), held in Budapest from October 14 to 17, Peter Braumüller, director of insurance and pension company supervision at FMA, was elected chairman of the Executive Committee of the IAIS. He is thus head of the most important body responsible for continued development of global supervisory standards for the insurance sector.

Born in Wiener Neustadt in 1959, Peter Braumüller studied actuarial mathematics at the Vienna University of Technology, there earning the title of “Academically Certified Actuarial Mathematician”, and then law at the University of Vienna, where he earned master’s and doctor’s degrees. He joined the Austrian Federal Ministry of Finance (insurance supervision) in 1983 and was later appointed head of the insurance supervision group in 1999. Since establishment of the Austrian Financial Market Authority FMA as an independent, autonomous and integrated supervisory authority, he has been head of insurance and pension company supervision.

The International Association of Insurance Supervisors (IAIS) was founded in 1994. At present, about 190 insurance supervisory authorities and regulators from 140 countries all over the world belong to the IAIS. It develops global principles, standards and guidelines for insurance companies and for bodies supervising them.
