The premium volume and profit of Austrian insurance undertakings increased in the 1st quarter of 2025. On the income side, the most dynamic increase was in health insurance, with premiums written increasing by 8.9% to € 857 million, as well as in funds and index-based life insurance, where the premiums written increased by 13% to € 420 million. Total premium volume rose to € 7.3 billion for the quarter ending in March, a 4.8% increase over the corresponding quarter in 2024. The adjustments made to premiums in light of previous inflation were noticeable here.
The result from ordinary activities increased significantly during the reporting period by 62% to € 370 million (previous year € 228 million). A 7.8% higher financial result and an € 85 million decrease in expenses for settling insurance claims in non-life and accident insurance contributed significantly. During this quarter, non-life and accident insurance was again the most profitable area of the balance sheet for Austrian insurers, with an operating margin (the ratio of the result from ordinary activities to the premium volume) standing at 9.2% (life insurance: 0.72%, health insurance: 0.46%).
Austrian insurance undertakings’ solvency ratio remains high, and practically unchanged at 260% compared against the previous quarter (254%).
