FMA Checklist: recognise fraudulent websites in 7 easy steps

Release Date: |
Categories:

The Internet is home to a host of opportunities – and dangers. Fraudulent websites apparently offering serious financial services or investment options result repeatedly in consumers sustaining heavy losses. In the latest edition of its “Let’s talk about money” series, the Austrian Financial Market Authority (FMA) has published a simple to understand seven step checklist, that users can use to recognise and avoid fraudulent websites.

Users should always read the legal notice (Impressum) – which is compulsory on legitimate sites, and when it seems dubious, should also exercise a healthy degree of scepticism. Is there something strange about the URL? Does it contain contact details and do they tie up with the provider’s apparent registered office? Does the provider hold a licence issued by the FMA? Does the site make unrealistic promises about returns, or are the products difficult to understand? These are all questions to ask that may help recognise a fake website.

The FMA warns: fraudulent websites often use professional designs and targeted market to instil trust. It is essential to check them carefully and to cast a critical eye over them, to avoid becoming a victim of investment fraud, fake crypto platforms or other dubious offerings.

The latest edition of “Let’s talk about money” entitled “Check websites like a detective!” as well as all previous editions are available for download online at https://redenwiruebergeld.fma.gv.at/. Further information about bank accounts can be found on the FMA website.
