European long-term investment funds (ELTIFs)

In mid-2013 a legal framework was proposed for creating uniform provisions in relation to long term investment funds – a suggested Regulation on European Long-term Investment Funds (ELTIF).

The aim of the Regulation is to make capital available that is to be assigned to long-term European investments in the real economy in accordance with the aim of the European Union to ensure intelligent, sustainable and integrated growth. Both ELTIFs managers and the ELTIFs are required to be approved by the respective supervisory authority.

ELTIFs are required to invest at least 70 % of their capital in precisely defined categories of permitted investment assets.

ELTIFs are intended for professional investors and small investors alike.

ELTIFs managers must be authorised as alternative investment funds managers (AIFMs), with the ELTIFs themselves being authorised as alternative investment funds (AIFs).
